Botswana Innovation Hub
LUUM - Shop Architects
Developed for New York-based architectural practice SHoP, this bespoke lighting installation was based on SHoP’s concept and further developed for manufacture and installation.
Spanning an oculus void between two floors of the newly developed hub, the installation measures 5 metres in diameter and consists of 242 custom light nodes, suspended and powered through an intricate net of steel cables.
A key challenge in the project was translating SHoP’s concept into a functional system, particularly in developing the net, which served as both structural support and an electrical circuit. By embedding conductive elements directly into the cables, the LEDs were powered without the need for separate visible wiring, creating a seamless and technically advanced installation. Each custom LED node housed circuitry that stepped down the voltage from the net, ensuring efficient illumination while minimising heat output.
The final design forms a striking visual pattern, drawing inspiration from the living traditions of local craft in Gaborone
